Since the Education Reform Act of 1988 every Local Education Authority has had a duty to constitute a SACRE (Standing Advisory Committee on Religious Education), to advise it on matters of Religious Education and the local Agreed Syllabus for RE.

They are constituted mainly of representatives from the LEA, the local teachers' associations, the Church of England and other denominations.
